This sort of play can have a drastic impact on professional relationships. By definition, if someone is playing a role then they are hiding their true self and their true intentions in favour of a mask that they want to portray. Some who encounter this masked person will believe that the mask is the true person and respond to it at face value. Others will see right through the mask and be suspicious about the masked person, leading to a response that is also masked. In either case the false representation of the mask hinders the formation of an honest and depth relationship.
Employees should be encouraged to bring their real selves to work rather than putting on a show. Their real self will include the good, the bad, and the ugly, but it will be recognisable as real and honest rather than a tidy, perfectly formed, unnatural mask. Taking off the mask will result in honest and open communication and a depth of relationship that can only occur in real life rather than on stage.
